Today in History

In 1943, a plane carrying WWII bombardier and former Olympic distance runner Louis Zamperini crashed near Hawaii. He and two of his fellow crewmates survived and began a 47-day odyssey on the seas before Japanese soldiers captured them as prisoners of war. The heroic and trying journey was documented by Laura Hillenbrand in the best-selling book Unbroken. See the missing air crew report that details the downing of Zamperini's plane.
