On this day in 1962, mechanical engineer Nils Bohlin received a United States patent for his three-point automobile safety belt. Bohlin created his visionary design—a device which secures a person's upper and lower body to a seat—for Volvo, which soon incorporated the technology into its new model cars. More than 50 years after the three-point seatbelt was patented, find out how the device stacks up against modern research.
